I run a respite house for victims of hate crimes and am looking for funding or donations to help cover the costs of respite guests' groceries and their hydro costs. I am a retired mental health counsellor and live on disability due to a hate crime. Victims Services does little after-care. Many of the long term effects from a hate crime are life altering.
My respite house is on Quadra Island, British Columbia, Canada: an old, former kayaking bed and breakfast resort. The peace and beauty here is incredibly healing.
I cannot afford to tend to victims for more than a few days unless they get immediate employment or income assistance. This respite house is a last stop - a place stayed at much like a women's safe house. It is a last refuge for anxious, depressed, homeless or near homeless, and suicidal victims. So, though I personally cannot afford to feed and house these good people, the need is so great that I am put in a difficult situation. Most of these people are traumatized and functioning poorly by the time they get here.
If anyone has an idea of how I might acquire funding or donations, I would appreciate hearing about it. Such a small amount is needed.
Thank you,
Mary Lamont
